"The Ghost Standard"

I read a science fiction short story by William Tenn, called "The Ghost Standard."

There are three characters; a computer, a human, and an alien.

The human is named Juan Kidd.
The alien is named Tuezuzim.

Hmmm, do ya think William Tenn's been to a Seder or two?

Councilman Booted for Tending to FarmVille

News you can use:

(March 28) -- Anyone who plays FarmVille knows it is critical to harvest your crops on time. But maybe it's not as important as administrating the second-largest city in Bulgaria.

Dimitar Kerin was voted off a committee assignment by the Plovdiv City Council for his inability to stop tending his virtual crops on the Facebook game during meetings.

Fox News falls for Faux News

seen on the Fox News website 29-Mar-2010:

Global Warming Activist Freezes to Death in Antarctica

Famed global warming activist James Schneider and a journalist friend were both found frozen to death on Saturday, about 90 miles from South Pole Station, by the pilot of a ski plane practicing emergency evacuation procedures.

"I couldn't believe what I was seeing", recounted the pilot, Jimmy Dolittle. "There were two snowmobiles with cargo sleds, a tent, and a bright orange rope that had been laid out on the ice, forming the words, 'HELP-COLD'."

Last Supper Super-Size

  from USA Today:

Portion sizes increase in 'Last Supper' paintings

If your food portions seem to have grown larger over the years, you have some blessed company.

Two researchers analyzed the food and plate sizes in 52 of the most famous paintings of The Last Supper and found that the portion sizes in the paintings have increased dramatically over the past millennium, from years 1000 to 2000.

Using a computer program, they compared the size of loaves of bread, main dishes and plates to the size of the heads of the disciples and Jesus in the artwork, including Leonardo da Vinci's famous depiction of the event.

Findings published in April's International Journal of Obesity:  Over that 1,000-year period, the main course size increased by 69%, plate size 66% and loaves of bread 23%. The biggest increases in size came after 1500.

Why is this President different from all other Presidents ?

In what the New York Times  dubs "one of the newest, most intimate, and least likely of White House traditions," a group will gather in the White House to celebrate Passover at sunset on Monday evening.

The "Obama Seder" began during the campaign when three low-level staffers gathered for an impromptu Seder and were surprised when Obama joined them. That one took place at the height of the bitter primary battle, and at the end of the night, Obama added his own addendum to the traditional "next year in Jerusalem" ending: "Next year in the White House!" And they did.

When Passover begins at sunset on Monday evening, Mr. Obama and about 20 others -- including senior officials and a few low-level staffers -- will gather for a ritual that neither the rabbinic sages nor the founding fathers would recognize.

In the Old Family Dining Room, under sparkling chandeliers and portraits of former first ladies, the mostly Jewish and African-American guests will recite prayers and retell the biblical story of slavery and liberation, ending with the traditional declaration "Next year in Jerusalem."

And if it's the same as last year, Malia and Sasha Obama will be taking on the role of Jewish children and asking the four questions about the night's purpose.

Retreat Ceremony at the “Berlin wall of Asia”

The Wagah border often called the "Berlin wall of Asia",is a ceremonial border on India – Pakistan Border, where each evening, there is a retreat ceremony called 'lowering of the flags'.

At that time there is a very energetic and thrilling parade by the Border Security Force (B.S.F), India and the Pakistan Rangers soldiers. It may appear slightly aggressive and even hostile to foreigners, but it really is just spectacular entertainment for the crowds with grandstands having been built on both sides. Troops of each country put on quite an entertaining show in their uniforms with their colorful turbans.

For 45 minutes every sunset they high kick, stamp, speed march and shout their way through a choreographed routine that ends in the lowering of both flags and the slamming of the border gates.

The "retreat ceremony", the traditional way to end hostilities for the day, is a lot less aggressive than it used to be - and any tension is cheered away by the baying crowd of thousands who pack the stadiums on either side every night.

Meet the Incredible Hulk of Hounds

from the UK Daily Mail:

Maybe they should call her a whoppet - after all, she's a whopper of a whippet.

This is Wendy, the dog whose appearance is a long way from the usual long, lean and sleek look of her breed.

She was born with a genetic defect which has left her looking like the Incredible Hulk of Hounds.
While her head, heart, lungs and legs are the size of those of a normal whippet, her gene defect means she is "double muscled".

She weighs 4st4lb - twice as much as she should - and has bulging neck muscles, burly shoulders and haunches like a baboon. And unlike ordinary whippets known for their lithe and narrow frame, this four-year-old pedigree doesn't just have a sixpack stomach, she has a 24-pack.

full atticle (and more pictures) @ http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-467985/Meet-Incredible-Hulk-Hounds.html

(btw, 4 stone, 4 pound = 27 kilograms)

My fave Passover joke

A Jewish guy decides to eat his lunch in the park.

He sits on a park bench next to a blind man.

The Jewish guy takes two pieces of matzoh from his lunch and, feeling friendly, passes one to the man next to him.

The blind man holds the matzoh for a moment, then asks, "Who wrote this nonsense?"

=====

from the website:

While the station may be closed, and very few straphangers have actually seen it, the track on which City Hall Station is located is not abandoned.

The #6 trains still pass through it on their way northbound, reversing direction using the loop for the journey back to the Bronx. In fact, to get to City Hall station, one must ride on an out-of-service #6 train. To get out, the motorman would key open a a single end door to allow visitors to step carefully out onto the platform.

First-time visitors are awe-struck at the station's huge glass and brick arches and tiling. From time to time the NY Transit Museum has tours of this station, but these have been suspended due to perceived security risks in the area around City Hall.

NY Times: I Need to Vent. Hello, Facebook

WHAT is the sound of an awkward silence on Facebook?

If you have to ask, then you probably don't have friends like James Gower and Ashley Andrews, high school sweethearts from Spring, Tex., who are both 22 and engaged to be married this May.

Mr. Gower, a master of the passive-aggressive status update, lobbed this one in January: "How is it my birthday is only one day, but my woman's last a whole damn week?"

Ms. Andrews, seemingly not one to watch a ball go by, took a full swing with this comment: "GET OVER IT!!! UGH!!!!!!"

Mr. Gower replied by calling his fiancée a name that can't be printed here, until the exchange became the social networking equivalent of shattered china at a dinner party.

Eventually, Skyler Hurt, 22, a friend and a bridesmaid, intervened: "Hey, you guys know we can still see this right ...?"

Jonesing for Facebook

Nearly half of Internet users check for or post updates to Twitter and Facebook after they have already gotten themselves tucked into bed, during the night, or first thing when they wake up, according to a new report from Retrevo.

The study asked more than a thousand Internet users about their own behaviors when it came to social media and gadget usage, and discovered that many of us are just flat out addicted.

According to Retrevo, 55 percent of users over the age of 25 must check Facebook at least once a day. That's not that freakish—yet.

Eleven percent said they can't even go more than a couple of hours before popping onto their favorite social network, and when users under 25 are taken into consideration, that number went up to 18 percent.

The Garfield Randomizer

from my friend John:

You've been far too productive lately.  This should fix that:

The Garfield Randomizer

It pulls three random panels from the library of Garfield comic strips
Most resulting strips are at least as funny as the actual Garfield strips

The random juxtapositions can create the appearance of comedic sequences (see attached)
And sometimes they are simply Zen-like in their approach to comedy

US Court Rules Thimerosal Does Not Cause Autism.

US Court Rules Thimerosal Does Not Cause Autism.

The New York Times (3/13, A11, McNeil) reported, "In a further blow to the antivaccine movement, three judges ruled Friday in three separate cases that thimerosal, a preservative containing mercury, does not cause autism."

The rulings "are the second step in the Omnibus Autism Proceeding begun in 2002 in the United States Court of Federal Claims," which "combines the cases of 5,000 families with autistic children seeking compensation from the federal vaccine injury fund." The fund pays "families of children hurt by vaccines," but it "has never accepted that vaccines cause autism."

The Los Angeles Times (3/13, Maugh, Zajac) reported, "The cases that three judges, called special masters, chose to rule on as test cases were considered among the strongest, so the outlook appears grim for others making the same claim." In one case, Special Master Denise K. Vowell wrote that "petitioners propose effects from mercury in [vaccines] that do not resemble mercury's known effects in the brain, either behaviorally or at the cellular level."

"The cases had been divided into three theories about a vaccine-autism relationship for the court to consider," the AP (3/13, Schmid) reported. The court previously "rejected a theory that thimerasol can cause autism when combined with the measles-mumps-rubella vaccine," and "a theory that certain vaccines alone cause autism." But, Friday's "ruling doesn't necessarily mean an end to the dispute...with appeals to other courts available." Reuters (3/13, Fox) and AFP (3/13) also covered the story.

Friday Funny

"Anyone with needs to be prayed over, come forward to the front at the altar," the Preacher said.

Dave gets in line, and when it's his turn, the preacher asks, "Dave, what do you want me to pray about for you?"

Dave replies, "Preacher, I need you to pray for help with my hearing."

The preacher puts one finger in Dave's ear, and he places the other hand on top of Dave's head and prays and prays and prays.  He prays a blue streak, and the whole congregation joins in with enthusiasm.

After a few minutes, the Preacher removes his hands, stands back and asks, "Dave, how is your hearing now?"

Dave says, "I don't know, Reverend. It ain't 'til next Wednesday."

News Dots: The Day's Events as a Social Network

An interactive map of how every story in the news is related, updated daily.

Like Kevin Bacon's co-stars, topics in the news are all connected by degrees of separation.

To examine how every story fits together, News Dots visualizes the most recent topics in the news as a giant social network. Subjects—represented by the circles below—are connected to one another if they appear together in at least two stories, and the size of the dot is proportional to the total number of times the subject is mentioned.

To use this interactive tool, just click on a circle to see which stories mention that topic and which other topics it connects to in the network. Double click a dot to zoom in on it. From there, you can click on any connected dot to see which stories mention both subjects. To zoom out, just double click in white space or use the zoom out button in the upper left corner. The buttons in the upper right can toggle the emphasis between the importance of a subject and how recently it has appeared on the radar.

Google Maps Adds Bike-Friendly Features

Google Maps, a popular feature offered by the Internet search giant, currently offers directions for car travel, walking, and public transportation. Starting on Wednesday, the service will add bicycling directions at maps.google.com/biking for 150 different cities around the United States.

"Several online bike-trip sites already exist," the Chicago Tribune reported. "But bicycling advocates hope Google's entrance in the market benefits not only individual riders. ... One goal is to make it easier for non- or infrequent cyclists to access the service, thereby promoting more bicycling." Plus, Google reaches a far wider audience.

And, the site's advanced algorithm will calculate riding time based on a number of factors, including length, fatigue and changes in elevation. It will map out recommended turn-by-turn routes, but also highlight existing bike trails, on-street lanes and more. "The Google bike-trip planner will not immediately by available on cell phones, and other wireless devices, but company officials said they are working on a mobile application so that cyclists can look up directions while on their bikes," the Tribune reported.

A Tale of Two Airplanes

A C-130 was lumbering along when a cocky F-16 flashed by.  The jet jockey decided to show off.

The fighter jock told the C-130 pilot,"Watch this!" and promptly went into a barrel roll followed by a steep climb. He then finished with a sonic boom as he broke the sound barrier. The F-16 pilot asked the C-130 pilot what he thought of that.

The C-130 pilot said, "That was impressive, but watch this!"  The C-130 droned along for about 5 minutes and then the C-130 pilot came back on and said: "What did you think of that?"

Puzzled, the F-16 pilot asked, "What the heck did you do?"

The C-130 pilot chuckled. "I stood up, stretched my legs, walked to the back, took a leak, then got a cup of coffee and a cinnamon roll."

The moral of the story is....
When you are young and foolish - speed and flash may seem a good thing.
When you get older and smarter - comfort and dull ain't so bad.

===

On a personal note:
I used to feel bad about not being the F-16 that I once was, when I hung out in the city and frequented restaurants, clubs, and bars.

These days, if you look for me in those old haunts, I'm not there.
So, I guess I'm a Stealth Fighter.

Microsoft Releases Security Advisory to Address VBScript Vulnerability

added March 2, 2010 at 08:36 am

Microsoft has released a security advisory to address a vulnerability in VBScript. The advisory indicates that this vulnerability exists in the way that VBScript interacts with Windows Help files when using Internet Explorer.
