Ok, this is pretty cool.  There  are about 1.609 kilometers to a mile.  The golden ratio is 1.618-something.   So for a rough but still good approximation of a conversion, you need to look no further than any two adjacent numbers in the Fibonacci series.
 
1,1,2,3,5,8,13,21,34,55,89,144...
 
55mph ?  That's about 89kph. 
Your destination is 13 km away ?  You've got about 8 miles to go. 
Your car gets 21 miles to the gallon ?  That's 13 km to the...
 
...ok, so converting to liters is left as an exercise for the student.
 
 Math rocks.
