Elena Kagan shows off sense of humor in confirmation hearings

Kagan brought the house down during an exchange on Tuesday with Sen. Lindsey Graham. The South Carolina Republican was about to ask Kagan whether terrorists like the Christmas Day bomber in Detroit should be given Miranda warnings before being questioned for intelligence information.

"Where were you on Christmas Day?" Graham asked, setting up his line of questioning.

Kagan could see where he was headed and attempted to dodge the question. "That is an undecided legal issue," she said.

Graham persisted. "I just asked you where you were on Christmas?"

A gleam appeared in Kagan's eye. She laughed out loud. "You know, like all Jews, I was probably in a Chinese restaurant."

The hearing room erupted in laughter followed by applause. Perfect delivery. Perfect timing.

"Great answer," Graham responded.

Senate Judiciary Committee chairman Patrick Leahy (D) of Vermont added, between laughs: "I could almost see that coming… Senator Schumer explained this to me."

Sen. Charles Schumer (D) of New York chimed in: "No other restaurants are open."

The new white meat

Canned Unicorn Meat

Pâté is passé.    Unicorn - the new white meat.

Excellent source of sparkles!

Unicorns, as we all know, frolic all over the world, pooping rainbows and marshmallows wherever they go. What you don't know is that when unicorns reach the end of their lifespan, they are drawn to County Meath, Ireland.

The Sisters at Radiant Farms have dedicated their lives to nursing these elegant creatures through their final days. Taking a cue from the Kobe beef industry, they massage each unicorn's coat with Guinness daily and fatten them on a diet comprised entirely of candy corn.

Goce satellite views Earth's gravity in high definition

It is one of the most exquisite views we have ever had of the Earth.

This colourful new map traces the subtle but all pervasive influence the pull of gravity has across the globe.

Known as a geoid, it essentially defines where the level surface is on our planet; it tells us which way is "up" and which way is "down".

It is drawn from delicate measurements made by Europe's Goce [Gravity Field and Steady-State Ocean Circulation Explorer] satellite, which flies so low it comes perilously close to falling out of the sky.

Science wins a round.

.

The Institute For Creation Research Gets Slammed, Rejected By Federal Judge

The Institution for Creation Research was a California-based school that moved to the Dallas area three years ago.

They applied to Texas' Higher Education Coordinating Board for certification to give master's degrees in science; the HECB reviewed their curriculum and turned them down. They sued.

A federal judge in Austin has ruled against the group and in favor of the HECB, in a ruling that stings pretty hard.

"It appears that although the court has twice required [ICR] to re-plead and set forth a short and plain statement of the relief requested, plaintiff is entirely unable to file a complaint which is not overly verbose, disjointed, incoherent, maundering and full of irrelevant information," Judge Sam Sparks wrote.

And then he got to the meat of the case.

The Court notes for the record it enters no opinion here on whether it agrees with the Board's decision. It does not " judge the wisdom, fairness, or logic" of the Board's decision, because it has no jurisdiction to do so. The Court simply comes to the conclusion, which is inescapable, that the decision was rationally related to a legitimate state interest.

He noted that the ICR is free to teach the course any way they want even with his ruling; they just can't offer a certified master's degree in science to graduates.

And that's probably a good thing. In his summary judgment ruling Sparks said Joseph Stafford, one of the people reviewing the issue for the state:

quoted the following excerpts from ICRGS's program catalog:

1. "It is the position of the institute that...all genuine facts of science support the Bible."

2. "The phenomenon of biological life did not develop by natural processes from inanimate systems but was specially and supernaturally created by the creator."

3. "All things in the universe were created and made by God in the six literal days of the Creation Week described in Genesis...[.] The creation record is factual, historical, and perspicuous; thus all theories of origin and development that involve evolution in any form are false. (emphasis added by Stafford).

Dr. Stafford concluded these statements (and others) constituted a rejection of the fundamental principles which guide what scientists do, because scientists must "remain open to all facts and all observations of natural phenomena in order to refine and improve their comprehensive explanations of how natural processes appear to work."

The National Center for Science Education praised the ruling, calling it "a significant legal defeat" for the ICR.

This is such a favorite with the guys on the rigs that the running joke is that our company was named after the dish! Believe me, you won't have leftovers (but, if you do, they'll last and last).

Ingredients:

Prawns. If prawns are extinct, use chicken drumettes.
Enough finely chopped garlic to overcome aroma

1. Coat prawns with garlic. If necessary, use glue gun.
2. Broil. Watch for flareups.

Every now and then, one of these basement fusor projects makes the local news. Here's an article from a recent edition of the Rochester (NY) Democrat and Chronicle about the fusor that Matthew Honickman built to start the New Year:

"This is fun," he said. "For a lot of people, fusion seems kind of like something that's only done in really, really large, expensive government facilities."
Ted Kinsman, one of Honickman's science teachers at Brighton High School, said that he is aware of only a few high school students who have ever constructed fusors.
"It's quite an accomplishment," he said. "Basically, I applaud him. That's a lot of work."

Dostoevsky-Themed Metro Station Prompts Suicide Concerns

Moscow transit officials have opened a new metro station in honor of Russian author Fyodor Dostoevsky, despite concern that the writer's gloomy temperament could turn the Dostoyevskaya stop into a "mecca" for suicide. True to Dostoevsky's dark prose, the station is covered with somber black-and-gray murals depicting scenes from his novels.

One wall features a character from The Demons holding a gun to his head, and another "re-enacts the moment when the main character in Crime and Punishment murders an elderly pawnbroker and her sister with an axe."

Lucky passengers are also treated to a "depressed-looking" portrait of Dostoevesky, which greets them while they wait for trains. While psychologists worry that the gloomy décor could "attract people with an unnatural psyche," artist Ivan Nikolayev dismissed concerns as ridiculous. "What did you want? Scenes of dancing?" Nikolayev asked. "Dostoevsky does not have them."

Hidden message in $8.5 million dollar NYC apt.

.

The New York Times reports on a Da Vinci Code-esque scavenger hunt built in hidden riddles, poems and numberless secret doors and drawers by architectural designer Eric Clough in a 4,200-square-foot Fifth Avenue apartment once owned by Marjorie Merriweather Post. It was only accidentally discovered by Clouch's clients, and the puzzle took them weeks to solve.

In any case, the finale involved, in part, removing decorative door knockers from two hallway panels, which fit together to make a crank, which in turn opened hidden panels in a credenza in the dining room, which displayed multiple keys and keyholes, which, when the correct ones were used, yielded drawers containing acrylic letters and a table-size cloth imprinted with the beginnings of a crossword puzzle, the answers to which led to one of the rectangular panels lining the tiny den, which concealed a chamfered magnetic cube, which could be used to open the 24 remaining panels, revealing, in large type, the poem written by Mr. Klinsky.

Another amazing piece of pseudoscience

.

The Psionic Hieronymous Machine™

In 1948 a scientist, inventor named T. Galen Hieronymus patented a machine which was designed to "detect the presence of any element or combination of elements that may be in substance under investigation to determine their intensity an/or quanity thereof by the detection of their emissions or emanations." This simply means the device can locate any element by its individual freqency. The device turned out to be far, far more.

1. In the Cumberland Valley a scientist from the Pennsylvania Farm Bureau put a photo of an insect infested field into the machine commonly called a "Black Box". Along with it they put a tiny amount of insecticide. Forty-eight hours later, the insects in the infected field, many miles away, were all dead!

2. A scientist named George de la Warr, head of a huge of laboratory in Oxford, England put a piece of ordinary photographic film into an opening in the device and after a few minutes, removed a picture of his wife and himself on their wedding day, 30 years before.

Yet, why then does the A.M.A. claim it's all quackery? Mostly because Orthodox science cannot accept the way it supposedly works.

What if academics started writing the news?

from Slate.com

A new article in the Columbia Journalism Review discusses the differences between political journalism and political science.

What if academics started writing the news?

 [excerpts]

A powerful thunderstorm forced President Obama to cancel his Memorial Day speech near Chicago on Monday—an arbitrary event that had no affect on the trajectory of American politics.

Chief among the criticisms of Obama was his response to the spill. Pundits argued that he needed to show more emotion. Their analysis, however, should be viewed in light of the economic pressures on the journalism industry combined with a 24-hour news environment and a lack of new information about the spill itself.

Republicans, meanwhile, complained that the administration has not been sufficiently involved in the day-to-day cleanup. Their analysis, of course, is colored by their minority status in America's two-party system, which creates a strong structural incentive to criticize the party in power, whatever the merits.
